As our host asks, is anyone in this situation wrong? Is anyone right? Is your alliance with the healthcare professional or the mother? As a professional you may understand the stress associated with urgent healthcare events affecting patients and their families. As a family member you may relate to the fears and frustration of the mother who is terrified for the safety of her son. Or perhaps you understand the perspective of both. What escalated the tension in this scenario? Can you imagine a more satisfying resolution to this interaction? Tone, words and body language play a crucial role in how we approach challenging interactions.

Both the mother and the health practitioner were feeling many emotions that affected their behaviour. Acknowledging some of those emotions helped the mother recognize that the health professional was doing her best to help under the circumstances. She was by no means calm but the level of frustration evident in the first scenario was much less. This in turn resulted in less pressure for the health practitioner to endure.

We suggest you make use of the Glossary of Communication Skills and Techniques to aid you as you analyze any of the interactions we present.
