The words and dates are of government treaties or legislation with or to do with Canada’s First Nations, most of them disastrously ruinous to the lives of indigenous peoples.

My Daily Practice of Smudging  

The title of the song accompanying the smudging is “Miigwech”, which means thank you and an honouring. Aqua Nibii Waawaaskone, the composer of the song, was partly inspired by the end of the Anishnaabe thanksgiving prayer:

Kind Spirit
Thank you for all our knowing
Thank you spirit of the east
Thank you spirit of the south
Thank you spirit of the west
Thank you spirit of the north
