This lesson emphasizes the dramatic life change and significant need for support as a patient reaches the end of life.
The following video shows a positive outcome to struggles we saw in the previous lesson. The patient is peacefully settled in the hospice with her friends providing loving support. As you watch the video, reflect on your own comfort level in being “present” and taking time to support someone who is close to death.

Recall the following quote from the beginning of this course:
“You matter because of who you are. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”
– Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement
The goal of palliative care is to care for and support the person who is dying, allow them to die peacefully, and allow them to live on their own terms until they die. It is a great responsibility but also a great privilege to be with someone on this journey.
