4. Communication Matters: Supporting Patient Autonomy

Hospital systems generally focus on clinical problems, not on patients’ personal issues. Taking the time to establish open channels of communication with your patient is the first step toward helping them gain autonomy over their end of life wishes. It is important to consider the patient as a critical part of planning and decision-making.
